We arrived just after sunset on a crisp winters evening. Peter met us at reception and welcomed us warmly.

Setting up was quick and easy and we had a fire blazing in no time. The sounds of the night closed around us and the call of a spotted hyena especially thrilling.

An early morning visit by a bold black backed jackal started the morning on a high note. Clear spoor of impala, jackal and zebra identified our night time visitors.

Spoor that was just a few days old of a lion added a small fission of delight!

Dinokeng Conservation fees R50.00 per person, 2-day self drive permit R160.00 and a map book (16th edition!) R50.00 saw us into the reserve for a slow meander – impala, wildebeest, zebra and giraffe placidly eyed us as we admired their great condition. Spotting two rhino with their attendant ox peckers was a treat. Gratitude and pride filled us as the truth of our small part in creating a safe haven for these magnificent animals was evidenced by their calm attitudes and total dismissal of their spectators, our vehicle and our low conversation.

The winter veld is dry and dusty but the giraffe seem to crunch their way through silver cluster leaf pods with relish.

The camp is private, spacious and clean. The ashes from our fire were removed daily. The ablutions and wash up area spotless on arrival and the gas geyser adequate even on a cold morning.

We did miss our fur-baby – The only low note to our visit. We are pleased that she enjoys play group at the Luna Doggy Hotel and look forward to collecting her.
